Yin yang dragons in black and white

Black and grey · Flash

A circular yin yang symbol made from two intertwined dragons, one black and one white, with their heads and bodies flowing around the circle. The linework is bold and tribal, with swirling solid black areas, fine white detail and decorative curled fins and tails. The image is a flat, centred design on a plain white background with no colour ink.

The deck oven is still ticking when you unlock the back door, and somebody has stacked the proving baskets the wrong way round again. You turn them, dust your hands and start the rye before the street lights go off. Nobody else is here yet. That is the arrangement, and it has held for eleven years: the night shift leaves the oven hot and the bench scraped clean, and you leave the bread for whoever comes after.

Most mornings you find a note tucked under the tin of salt. Hers is written in the same blunt pencil as the bake sheets, with a tick beside the things she thinks are fine. Yours go under the sourdough starter, a jar that has outlived two owners and three ovens. Last week you wrote that the seeded batch had caught too dark on the left. By Thursday she had replied with one line: it was the left, you were right, but the right was worse.

On Sunday the boiler failed and there was no one to hand over to. You stayed through the change of shift with your sleeves rolled and the radio turned low. At ten to six the back door opened and she came in with her hair tied in a scarf, looked at the trays and laughed without making a sound. You shaped loaves side by side for an hour, one dark dough and one pale, pressing them into the same tins. When the sun came up over the car park you drew the last tray out together and left it steaming in the middle of the bench.
