Tribal butterfly design in solid black
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black butterfly drawn in a tribal style, shown in profile with its wings angled upward and its antennae curling at the top left. The wings are filled with flowing, interlocking swirls and tapering stripes, with white negative space separating the shapes. The image is a plain white background with no shading or colour, so the design reads as a stencil-ready silhouette.

The lift at Kestrel Court has been dead for nine days, so you carry the shopping up eleven floors with the bag handles biting into your fingers, counting landings the way your nan counted stitches. On the fourth floor Dez is crouched by the stairwell wall with a bent hairpin, scratching curls into the grey paint. He says the wall needs something that doesn't ask permission. You watch the lines tighten into a swirl, then a second swirl folding off it, then a long tapering stripe that could be a wing or could be a sail.

By the weekend the council has sent a man with a roller and a tin of magnolia, and by Monday the whole stairwell is the colour of wet cardboard. You go up anyway, because the post room is on the ground floor and your mum is waiting on a letter. On the landing where the hairpin lines were, the magnolia has bubbled and split, and through the cracks the black shapes are pushing up like something coming out of a cocoon. Nobody has painted over the bit by the bin chute, where Dez dragged the point of the hairpin so hard it went through to the brick.
That evening the lift wheezes back to life for exactly one trip. You step in with the shopping and press eleven, and as the doors close you catch the wall's new wings in the mirror, black on cream, opening upward at the top of the shaft. The lift jolts, rises, and you carry on rising with it, the handles finally light in your hands.
