A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The barometer in the hall at Marram House had hung over the coat stand since before Ada Pell bought the place, and she had never once seen its needle move on its own. It sat in its small oval case like a face that had decided not to comment. Every morning she tapped the glass with one knuckle, the way her father had, and every morning the needle hovered at Fair out of pure stubbornness while the sea outside went on being grey.

On the Tuesday the Harwood girls came down to breakfast in their dressing gowns, complaining that the tea had gone cold before it reached the table. Mr Cowell, who had lodged in room four since Easter and paid in exact coins, watched Ada tap the glass and said nothing at all. He had kept a lighthouse once, he had told her, and he knew what a falling glass looked like before anyone else did. At eleven the needle dropped a whole inch towards Stormy, so fast it seemed to flinch.

She took a tray of bread out to the railings for the gulls and stopped there. The fishing boats were already hauled up on the shingle, and Mr Cowell was walking slowly along the prom with his hat in his hand, looking up at the sky as if he were counting something. She thought of the small brass pivot that held the needle to the dial, the single point everything else turned around.

By four o'clock the rain was coming sideways off the bay and the boarding house smelt of wet wool. Ada took the umbrellas from the stand, lit every lamp along the hall, and tapped the glass once more. The needle had not moved. It did not need to. She put the kettle on for the lodgers who were still out and left the front door on the latch.
