Mountain range tattoo on a wrist
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A row of angular mountain peaks runs across the wrist, with the tallest summit near the centre. The linework is light and the peaks are filled with stippled dots that fade toward the base, giving a shaded, faceted look. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against a plain black background, with the hand clenched below it.

Nobody on Ward Seven believed the old porter when he said the mountains were out tonight, so I told them to go and look for themselves. They went. Fifteen minutes later Nurse Halloran came back with her cap askew and said the window at the end of the corridor had a range of peaks in it where the car park should be, grey and stippled like a pencil drawing left out in the rain. Nobody argued. We all know what this hospital does at three in the morning.

The porter, Tomasz, had been a climber once, before his knees went. He said the peaks were the ones from the calendar in the staff room, the one nobody had turned since March. He said the tallest one had a crack down its face shaped like the line of a river on a map, and that if you pressed your palm to the cold glass you could feel the wind coming up off it. Halloran pressed her palm to the glass and went quiet. Then she went back to the nurses' station and wrote something in the log that none of us were allowed to read.
By four the peaks had slid lower, the way a tide goes out, and by five there was only a dark ridge above the bins and a clean sky over it. Tomasz kept the calendar on his trolley after that. He said the mountains had left a message, and that a man who waits long enough on a ward learns to read the weather in other people's hands. Halloran only said, when the day shift came on, that she had seen the top of the tallest peak go pale with snow, and that whoever it was had got to the other side.
