You are my sunshine lettering in a sun
Lettering · Colour · Flash
A line drawing of a sun with a ring of pointed rays, with the phrase You are my sunshine set inside the disc in mixed script and block capitals. The linework is a single even blue outline with simple wave lines beneath the lettering. The design sits centrally on a plain white background with no body or skin visible.

Mind the lock gate, my girl, it sticks worse than my brother-in-law ever did. There. Now sit on the coaming where the sun can get at you, because the canal won't give you another day like this one until the back end of September.

My grandfather brought the Marigold up from Stourport with a wife who couldn't swim and a cat that could, and every morning of that trip he sang the same song to the water. Half the tune he made up himself, and the other half he stole from a music hall man in Birmingham who owed him four shillings. The words came out as You are my sunshine and then trailed off into humming, because he never could remember what came after, and he said the river didn't mind.
At the last lock before Tardebigge the rain came in sideways, and then the sun broke through it like a dropped plate. He stood at the tiller with his hat gone and laughed so hard he nearly put us into the reeds. My grandmother always said that was the moment she decided on him, though she never once told him so to his face.
When the Marigold was sold for firewood money, he took a penknife to the tiller board and cut a sun into the oak, rays all round, with the words set inside the disc the way he'd sung them. Every time I took the boat through a lock after that, I found it under my hand, and I never once steered her off course.
