Zombie and portrait full sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A five-panel collage shows a full sleeve tattoo from several angles. Zombie heads and a reaching hand sit above a yellow sky, with three face portraits and a sign-style lettering panel lower on the arm. The shading is smooth and detailed with strong contrast, and the palette mixes skin tones, purples, blues and yellows.

That was the summer the grey sky turned the colour of weak tea and the sun went down like a brass coin into the hedge. Her grandson Tobias carried a tin bucket of pennies from stall to stall, and he never once looked at the reaching hands at the fence. He had been told not to look, and a boy of nine will obey a rule that keeps him safe until the rule starts to feel like a lie.

On the last night a man came through the gate with a pentagram scratched on the back of his wrist and a rope of iron links trailing from his collar. He did not want the sweets or the coconut. He asked Ada for the names of the three people she had buried in the orchard, and she gave them to him, one at a time, reading them from a cracked slate. He wrote each name in the dust with his finger, and the dead stood up from the field and walked into the dark like people leaving a wedding.

Tobias found the bucket of pennies still full at dawn. Ada was gone, and the drum had stopped, and the sign over the gate said only what it had always said: DEAD END, in letters a child could read easily from the road.
