Joker and Batman full arm sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The sleeve shows the Joker holding a playing card, a Batman figure with a cape and cowl, bats, a city skyline and the words 'Why so serious?' in pink script. The Joker's face and Batman's figure are shaded with smooth blending and detailed highlights. Bright pinks, purples, blues and oranges fill the background, and the four views wrap the arm from front to back.

Dessie Carr had the last dance booked at the Majestic, and the bandleader had promised the pink tubes over the stage would stay lit until she finished. By half eleven they were buzzing like a wasp in a jar, and the floor smelt of Brylcreem and spilt lager.

The man in the grey suit had been at the bar since eight. He did not dance. He turned a playing card over and over on the zinc, the queen of hearts with one corner worn soft, and every time the band hit a bridge he smiled at nothing. Dessie knew that look. Her brother had worn it the winter before he went to the docks and didn't come home for a fortnight.

"You're the girl who runs the raffle," he said when she passed with her tray.

"I'm the girl who counts the money," she said. "Which one are you?"

He laughed, a short bark, and slid the card across. On its back someone had pencilled a small bat with its wings spread like a stitched hem. "Tell the hall it's a waltz," he said. "Then ask them why they're still standing." She didn't ask anybody anything. She dimmed the lights instead, and in the blue dark the grey suit walked onto the boards with a cape like a hole torn in the night, and the whole room began to clap in time. When the spot finally found him, the grin under his hat had been painted on in purple and pink, and he was already dealing the next card.
