Zombie pin-up with MAN EATER banner

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

The design shows a pin-up style woman with wavy auburn hair and glowing green eyes, her face and shoulder cracked and decayed in a zombie style. A tan scroll banner with bold black lettering reading MAN EATER sits below and behind her. The bold black outlines, smooth shading and flat fills of red, green and tan give it a neo-traditional feel, with a plain white background.

Brother Anselm had the bread knife in one hand and the cellar ledger in the other when the woman came through the cloister gate, humming something she must have heard on a wireless. One shoulder was cracked like old plaster. She asked for Father Hugh by name.

The novices fled to the chapel. I stayed, because the Rule says a cellarer receives every guest who comes to the gate, and because she had a scroll tucked under one arm with MAN EATER lettered across it, each letter as tall as my hand. I asked, politely, whether that was a title or a warning.

"Both, Brother. Mostly it's a complaint about the men who came to the last dance." She settled on the mounting block and crossed her legs with great ceremony. Father Hugh arrived in his slippers, took one look at her, and sat down beside her as if they had met at a funeral years before. Perhaps they had. She told him she had lived on nothing but spite for two hundred years and wished to take the fast.

Hugh broke a crust from the morning loaf and gave it to her. She bit it, and the green light in her eyes flickered and steadied. "Well," she said, "that's the first honest thing a man has handed me." I unrolled her banner across the refectory door and wrote in the ledger: one guest, one crust, received with thanks.
