Black and grey pencil drawing of a zombie pin-up in a corset and fishnets, flanked by two roses on a red splatter background, in a neo-traditional style.

Zombie pin-up with roses and blood splatter

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A pin-up woman with long hair, stitched skin and clawed nails poses in a corset and torn fishnet stockings. Bold black outlines and pencil-style grey shading define the figure, with two large shaded roses on either side. Red blood-splatter marks surround the design on a cream background.

Dear Marjorie,

The roses came up black at the edges again this year, the way Mum's always did when the frost hung on into May, and I stood in the potting shed for an hour deciding whether to tell Dad. You'll laugh, but I have started talking to them the way she did. Yesterday I told the Lady Hillingdon bush that if it wanted digging up it could say so plainly.

It's the girl in the old tin box you sent me. The pin-up, with the corset laced tight as ship's rigging and the fishnets Mum wore to the Bingo dances. Remember how she always said a good rose needed a bit of mess at the heart? I think of that every time I look at her. Somebody has stitched her back together, arm and shoulder, and she still stands in all that red spatter like a woman who has been to a party and decided not to leave.

I have decided to plant her out. Not literally. I have built a bed by the side gate, two rows of Albertine with a gap in the middle the exact shape of a hip, and I am letting the bindweed take the corner where the paint would have run. Come down at Easter and help me lift the old trellis. You always had steadier hands with the wire.

Love, Hazel
