Woman with pink rose tattoo designs
Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Flash
A line drawing of a woman with long, flowing hair, one hand raised to her face, lowered eyes and bright pink lips. Her shoulder and upper arm carry pink rose and scroll designs, and a paisley pattern appears on her forearm. Black ink linework with hatching is combined with pink marker accents on a pale background.

Dear Morag, You'll laugh at me, but I have spent three nights on one shoulder. Mrs Okafor wanted the rose panel on the bodice to look as if it had grown there rather than been stitched on, so I worked it in a pink silk I dyed myself from madder and a little cochineal, which took four goes before it stopped looking like a sunburnt knee. The paisley runs down the left sleeve in a chain of teardrops, each one turned a fraction off the last so the pattern moves when the arm lifts. I know it by heart now. I dream in backstitch.

The bride, Juno, is nothing like her mother. She sat on my cutting table swinging her heels and asked whether the scrolls could carry on past the seam, because she wanted the dress to keep going when she turned. I told her the seam allowance was an inch and a half and the scrolls would have to stop where the seam stopped. She said we could simply move the seam. Nobody has ever offered to move a seam for me before. We did it, and I sat up until the bells from St Mary's rang one.
On the morning of the wedding the mother sent round a box with her own mother's lace veil folded in tissue, and a note asking whether the roses could be picked out in the same pink so the two would sit together. I unpicked three evenings of work in an hour rather than say no. I'm telling you because I think it was right. Juno looked at herself in the long mirror and said the dress finally looked like hers.
Post me the spare bobbins, and tell Dad the kettle's fine. I'll be home for Sunday.
Love, Eilidh
