Small numbers 13 and 1 with teal heart on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the numerals 13 and 1 in thin black handwritten-style linework, with a small solid teal heart sitting between them. The lines are fine and even, and the teal fill is the only colour in the design. The photograph is a close, straight-on view of the ankle against plain skin, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Mr Pennock kept the timetable board at the Cullerby depot, and every Thursday he chalked the departures in a hand so neat it might have been typed. The thirteen left the top of Harbour Hill at twenty past six. The one came in from the pier at quarter to. They met in the turning circle every evening for exactly four minutes, long enough, Ronnie Vaux said, for a driver to smoke a cigarette or for a girl to make up her mind.

Ronnie drove the thirteen and I took fares on the one, and in eighteen months we had exchanged nothing beyond the clack of my ticket punch and his nod through the windscreen. Then the fog came off the Channel in November and both buses sat dead in the circle behind a lorry that had shed its coal across the road. I climbed down into the cold with the tin of teal paint I had been meant to use on the depot gate since Whitsun, and on the iron shelter post, between the thirteen and the one Mr Pennock had stencilled there for the route signs, I painted a small heart.
Ronnie came round the back of his bus wiping his hands on a rag. He looked at the post for a long time. "You've put us in the middle," he said. I told him it was only paint and the fog would have it off by morning. He didn't laugh. He took the tin from me, dipped my brush, and made the heart a little fuller on the left side, where it had gone thin.
The fog lifted by six and both buses ran on time, which Mr Pennock regarded with suspicion. The next Thursday the board read as it always did, but in the margin beside the thirteen and the one he had drawn a small teal heart, and underneath, in that same tidy hand, he had written: Four minutes. Not a second less.
