She had eleven plates to sign off before handover, and the one that kept snagging her eye was a set of overlapping exposures from the ward upstairs, the same chest taken four times over a fortnight. Each new film sat a little off from the last, so the ribs seemed to wander and the shadow of the heart kept moving to the left. She tilted the top sheet with one finger and the whole stack bloomed into a figure, arms lifted, head tipped as if listening.

Her tea went cold on the desk. Somewhere down the lift shaft a trolley rattled and stopped. She thought of Mr Okafor's daughter asking her, the afternoon before, whether the pictures could show if things were getting better, and how Ruth had said that the films did not lie but they did not hurry either.

She clipped the sheets back into their envelopes, oldest at the bottom, and wrote the last report in block capitals: NO CHANGE SINCE PRIOR. Then she switched off the light box, and for a moment the dark room held the afterimage of that layered figure, red and yellow and blue, still standing in the air.
