The rain had come down on the Saturday market since before dawn, so the stallholders on Mill Lane had pulled their tarpaulins tight and stopped calling out their prices. Bet Harrow, who had nursed the whole town through two winters of chest coughs and one bad goose bite, stood under her striped awning with a stethoscope round her neck and nothing to do. Nobody came for medicine in the rain. They came for cheese and cabbages.

Then a boy with muddy knees came running up with a pound coin and asked for something to make his grandad stop sneezing. Bet took a bottle from the shelf, shook out a single red capsule, and then, because the boy looked so serious, she blew a bubble of pink gum the size of a plum and popped it against her lip. The boy laughed so hard he dropped the coin. She told him the capsule was for sneezing and the gum was for courage, and he should take both.

Word went round. By noon the lane was full of people wanting a little courage, and Bet had sold more gum than bandages. A thin old man with a bad hip asked whether her syringe could give him back his dancing. She told him plainly that it could not, but that the dance hall across the river had a sprung floor and an accordion player short of partners, and he went off smiling with his collar up.

When the market closed, Bet counted her takings under the awning. The bandages had mostly stayed put, and there were eleven coins for the gum. She hung the stethoscope back over her collar, drew the tarpaulin, and walked home through the puddles with a pink smear still on her lip.
