Abstract parent and child with lotus on an arm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A bold solid black abstract figure shows a larger form holding a smaller one, drawn with smooth flowing curves. Green swirling linework and a pink lotus flower sit beside the figure on the right. The black areas are solid fills with some subtle glossy texture, and the composition is a close, upright crop of the arm.

The ferry was already halfway across the mere when Ada Penhallow remembered the boy's boots. 'You'll take cold,' she said, but he only pointed.
Under the surface the green weed had begun to turn, the way it did before a change of weather. Her grandmother had called it the mere stirring its skirts. Ada dropped the pole, bent low over the boy, and wrapped her coat around them both until only their two heads showed above the collar. The boat drifted. The weed curled round the hull in slow spirals, and where the lamplight touched the water, a pink flower opened on the surface, petal by petal, as if it had been waiting for someone to stop pushing and start holding.
Nobody on the far bank ever learned what the mere wanted that night. They only saw the ferry come in slow and steady, the woman bent over the child like a question, and the water lily blooming beside the stage as bold as paint.
When the boy went up the mud to fetch his boots, he left a small wet print on the boards, and Ada did not wipe it away.
