Bold black semicolon-style symbol with purple, teal and pink flowers and fine black vines on the inner wrist.

Semicolon symbol with flowers on wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A bold, solid black symbol built from two semicolon-like marks and a curved stroke sits at the centre of the design. Three small flowers in purple, teal and pink are placed around it, joined by thin black vine linework with dot accents. The black ink is filled and heavy, while the flowers are shaded in colour, and the composition sits centrally on the wrist.

Idris found the gatepost stone under a drift of bindweed the week after the funeral, its face still crisp where the rain had not reached. Two strokes of carved slate sat above a fat curve, as if someone had started a sentence and thought better of ending it. His aunt Nell had never explained it. She had only told him, when he was small and sulking over a squashed seedling, that a pause was not the same as a full stop.

He spent that spring clearing the border she had let go to seed. Morning glory had strangled the lavender, and runners ran under the path like wire. He found her biscuit tin of seed packets, labelled in pencil, and the three he liked best went along the south wall where the sun lingered longest: purple, teal and rose. His cousins came up on Saturdays with trowels and flasks of tea, arguing about where the vines should go. Nobody wanted to cut them back. Nell had always let things wander and tie themselves together.

By June the teal bloom had opened at the corner, and the rose one had wound itself round the gatepost up to the stone. Idris stood with the hose and watched a bee work its way down into the throat of a flower, slow and unbothered, as if no one had ever asked it to hurry.

He left the gate on the latch that evening, and the path lit up pale in the dusk.
