The snow had shut the pass for three days, and the Blackthorn Inn was full of people who had stopped complaining and started playing cards. I was meant to be counting the flour sacks in the back store, but the mouse had got into the second one again, so I sat on an upturned crate and waited for him to show his face.

Mrs Oakes, who ran the kitchen with a wooden spoon held like a sceptre, called him the Captain, because he marched along the skirting board with his ears up as if the whole larder belonged to him. He had a scrap of pink silk tied at the top of his head, knotted so neatly that she swore no mouse could manage it. A pedlar had left it behind in October, she said, along with a box of thimbles and a bad temper. Nobody had ever asked how the Captain came by it.

On the third night the wind swung round and the windows went white. Frost grew on the inside of the glass in curls and loops, like the scrollwork on the old pewter plates, and the lamp in the hall flickered whenever the door rattled. Around midnight the ribbon was gone from the Captain. I found it hung on the bell rope by the front door, the bow perched on the bend of the rope where the lamplight caught it.

At dawn a man came stumbling up the drive, his beard iced solid, and stopped dead at the threshold. He looked at the pink bow glowing against the frost, then at me, and said he had been following it for an hour. Behind me, in the flour store, I heard a small, satisfied squeak.
