Lotus and vine with black musical symbol

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a bold, solid black stylised symbol that resembles a musical note or clef, with smooth edges and a dense black fill. A red lotus flower sits beside it, with thin green curling vines wrapping around the base of the design. The design fills most of the frame against bare skin, with the lotus and vines adding contrast to the heavy black form.

Tamsin Parr kept the reeds on Hollin Mere when the mill was still turning. She had a fiddle with one string left, black varnish worn through at the shoulder, carved from an ash her father pulled out of the water. The mere had gone quiet after the mill shut, and the lotus that grew there in her grandmother's day had shrunk to a single bud under the silt. Every dusk a boy called Wat Cobbold came down with a bucket and cursed the place for having nothing in it worth carrying home.

Tamsin told him the lotus didn't want pulling up. It wanted asking. She taught him to hum the low note the water still remembered, the one that sat heavy as a dropped stone, and to let it trail out over the green rushes the way you'd unwind a ribbon. Wat hummed for three weeks and felt a fool for all of them. On the twenty-first night the surface shivered, a red bloom lifted through the film of oil, and the vines came loose from the old stones one curl at a time.

So that's why the cellar smells of wet rope, and why nobody picks the lotus. Wat never did. He's ninety-one now and still hums at the sink when he thinks nobody's listening. Drink your tea. The rest is only the rain.
