Abstract swirl on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single abstract black design sits centrally on the upper back, formed of a looping curve that narrows into a tail and ends in a small curl at the base. The lines are bold and soft-edged, with slight variation in weight that gives a brushed look. The skin around the tattoo shows some redness, suggesting it may be recently done, and the background is out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brush is still wet when Mrs Oddie's boy trips over the bucket, and you catch the lamp-black before it runs down the side of the Gallopers. Behind you the generator coughs, the organ wheezes through its second tune, and somewhere past the dodgems a child is screaming with joy in the particular pitch only fairground children reach.

You have painted scroll on every ride the Marvell & Sons show has owned since you were sixteen. Gilt, vermilion, a green so dark it reads black after dusk. The old man taught you that a flourish must never stop dead. It should lift off the wood, swing round once like a dancer who has heard her name called from the back row, then curl under itself to finish, so the eye keeps going long after the hand has lifted.

Tonight there is no gold left in the tin, only the black you mixed from soot and linseed when the paint ran out in Hull. You lay the brush across the step, flex your wrist and draw one last stroke over the board. It narrows, hesitates, then dips into a tight little curl at the foot. It looks like nothing much, the scribble a child makes on a steamed window.

By morning the fair will be gone, rolled onto flatbeds and driven south, the boards riding the road with everything else. The stroke will still be there, drying in the dark, and you find you do not mind that it ends where it does.
