Looped symbol tattoo on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a stylised symbol made of smooth loops and curved strokes sits on the back of the neck. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no visible shading. The skin is light and the tattoo is centred in the frame, with the top of the image showing dark hair.

The river had bent back on itself again, and Ada Penrose had to decide whether to believe the chain or the water. She knelt on the wet shingle with the level set on its tripod and read the brass again. The old sheet from her grandfather's time showed the same loop, drawn in the same careful hand, a neat figure that curled out from the ford and came back to nearly touch its own bank before running on to the mill.

The council wanted it cut straight. A new channel, a few hundred yards of spoil, and the flood cart would never again wait at the Dye Works bridge. Ada had drafted the scheme herself and found the arithmetic pleasing. Then, on the Thursday, the miller's widow brought her a biscuit tin full of letters, each one about a boat that had gone round the loop in one season and not come out until the next.
She spread them on the trestle in the rain. Her grandfather had written to the same clerk twice, and the second letter ended with a small sketch: a loop, a tail turning inward, three short strokes for the weir. Beneath it he had signed himself simply, keep the bend.
Ada rolled up the scheme and left the cut undrawn. Walking back along the towpath, she stopped at the ford where the water ran slow and brown through its curl, and she let it go round once more before she turned for home.
