The dots were my idea. Each Saturday I spent a penny of my bread money at Mrs Pryce's shop on coloured sweets, then pressed them into the damp plaster of the lamp-room wall in the order the rainbow goes, red first, then orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Dad said the pit was one colour and that colour was nothing. I told him the lion was black but its breath wasn't.
The night the cage stuck, the lamp-room filled with men shouting names I half knew. I stood by the wall and counted the dots over and over, the way you count sheep when sleep won't come. At half past four the cage came up with Dad on it, black to the eyes, and he walked past me without seeing anything at all. Then he stopped and looked at the wall.
"Purple's the last one," he said, his voice rough as a dropped shovel.
"That's the tail," I said.
He wet his thumb, rubbed a smear of soot off the blue, and laughed, and that was the first time since the fall that I heard him laugh.
