Acorn and squirrel on the wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two palms face upwards on a green grass background, each wrist carrying a small tattoo. The left wrist has an acorn with a cup and shaded nut, and the right wrist has a squirrel sitting upright and holding something near its mouth. Both designs use fine, detailed linework with soft grey shading in a vintage illustration style, and the composition is centred on the wrists.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My father kept the ledger in the gamekeeper's hut at Hollin Bottom, a cloth-bound book that smelt of wet dog and lamp oil. Every autumn he wrote down what the wood gave up, and every autumn the squirrel took more than its share. "Took two, dropped one," he would mutter, copying the tally into the margin like a man settling a debt he had no hope of collecting.

The year I turned eleven, I decided the squirrel was owed something. I took a dish of hazelnuts from the store cupboard and set them on the stump by the old oak, where the animal sat up to scold us whenever we passed. Next morning the dish was bare except for one acorn cup, its shell hollowed clean and set upright in the middle like a thimble someone had left behind on purpose.

My father found it when he came up with the lamp. He turned the cup over in his fingers for a long time, then went back to the hut without a word. That evening the ledger had a new entry in his neat copperplate: Squirrel paid. Acorn returned.

The following autumn the cup was back on the stump, full of a single hazelnut and a sprig of oak leaf, and I understood that the books had balanced at last, though nobody had ever agreed on the sums.
