Antler and flower wrist tattoo
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A raised hand shows a small tattoo on the inner wrist, with brown antlers curving around a cluster of red and pink flowers and green leaves below. The linework is soft and fine, with the petals shaded in gentle washes of red and pink. The tattoo sits centrally on the wrist against a black and cream patterned rug.

The stag came down to Garrow's allotment gate the week the frost took the dahlias. Nell had been told a hundred times not to feed deer, so she fed it crab apples from the bucket by the water butt, one at a time, holding each on her flat palm the way her gran had held out bread to the geese. The animal took them with a soft lip and a long look, its antlers catching the grey light like the bare branches of the hawthorn behind it.

Her father said it was the same stag that had stood at the lane's end when he was a boy, and that his own father had sworn it could walk through a closed door. He hedged the lane every winter and never once cut the thorn where the stag liked to rest. "Leave it be," he said when the parish clerk came asking about the cabbages. So Nell took the last of the pink roses from the trellis, bound them with rosehip and sprigs of ivy into a ring, and hung it on the gatepost every morning where the stag could see it.
In January the men from the estate came with a lorry and found the gate hung with a wreath and the grass trodden flat in a circle. Nobody saw the stag after that. Nell told herself it had gone over the hill to the oaks, and she kept the wreath on the post until the rosehips shrivelled to black beads.
In April she went out at dawn and found a pair of antlers lying in the ditch by the lane, shed clean and pale as bone. Caught in one of the tines was a single red rose, fresh as the morning, its petals still holding the dew.
