Three birds in flight on the inner wrist

Other · Black and grey · Photo

Three solid black silhouettes of birds in flight are tattooed on the inner wrist, descending in size from left to right. The birds are filled in with black ink with no visible shading or outline, and the design is shown in black and grey only. The hand is raised against a blurred green hedge, with a silver bracelet of pearls and a rhinestone heart charm worn just below the tattoo.

Dad says the old grey hen always goes first and the youngest always comes in last, so on Tuesday I stood in the yard with the stopwatch and the rubber ring he'd lent me, counting the seconds the way he taught me, without blinking. The fog had come up off the Humber by nine, and the lorry had dropped them at Thirsk in the dark, so nobody knew what the road had done to them. Nan kept the kettle on in the scullery window so she could see the sky.

Mabel came first, low over the hedge at the bottom of Kettleby Lane. The other two were only specks that might have been rooks, and I stopped counting because my thumb had frozen on the button. Dad was on the bench with his cap pulled down, pretending to fiddle with a split perch. He didn't look up until I said the first one's in.

It was the little one that made him stand. Tuppence came over the chimney pots with her wings held stiff, as if she'd been cut from card, and she dropped straight into the trap without touching the roof. He wrote the time on the card in pencil, pressed so hard the paper tore, and then he told me to go and tell Nan she could take the kettle off.

I've kept the ring. It's in my coat pocket, still warm from my hand, and when the birds go up in the mornings I watch for the three of them together, the big one leading and the small one trailing, and wonder which of us will be the last one home.
