A small elephant in profile is filled with intricate patterns, including paisley-like motifs and dotted detail, and outlined in solid black. The tattoo sits on the upper back, just below the nape of the neck, with the subject's blonde hair falling across the top of the frame. The image is black and white, with soft natural light and a plain background that keeps focus on the design.

Nell Fairweather scraped the lint from her father's printing block with a bent pin, the way she had every Tuesday since the funeral. The block was pearwood, no longer than her palm, and on it a small elephant walked in profile, its body crowded with paisley swirls and tiny dots that her father had cut with a knife he kept for nothing else. He had brought the block home from a sergeant's kit in 1919, and it had hung on a nail above the mangle ever since, waiting for someone to need an elephant.

The Greave pit whistle went at six, and the shop filled with men on their way home, their collars grey with dust. They bought the printed cotton by the yard for handkerchiefs and tablecloths, and they never asked why an elephant walked across every length. Nell had never asked either. Her father had only said the dots were for the men who came up, and that was enough for a girl of nine to count them on the sheets as they dried.
Her nephew Tom was going down on Monday. She sat with the block in her lap and tried to cut a new one for him, a smaller elephant with its own dots, but her hand kept slipping and the dots came out as scars. Near midnight she gave up, inked the old pearwood and pressed it onto a bolt of white cotton, lifting it again and again until the cloth was printed from one end to the other.
She hung the longest length in the window before dawn. When the men came by at six, their lamps swinging, the elephant faced them from the glass, walking the way they came.
