A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last of the tent poles had gone to a scrap man in Wigan, and still the old elephant would not walk past the gate without stopping. Nell Varady had fed her every morning for nineteen winters, and she knew the stop was not stubbornness. It was a question the animal had been asking since the ringmaster sold the lorries.

Her grandmother used to say that an elephant remembers every road she has ever walked, and that if you draw one in a single line, it will walk you home. Nell did not believe it. She believed in feed bills and the price of hay. But on the last Sunday she took a pen from the caravan drawer and traced the cow's shape on the back of an envelope, trunk curled down at the front like a question mark, never lifting the nib so the line would be unbroken.

The field emptied. Men came for the ring, the cages and the striped awning, which they folded like a sleeping dog. Nell packed the Ford and found the elephant standing at the gate with her trunk raised. She walked over and held out the envelope. The old animal lowered her head to smell the paper, then turned slowly and set off down the lane toward the canal, where the road began.

Nell stayed by the gate until the lane was empty. Then she folded the envelope along its crease, put it in her coat pocket, and drove home with the window down, listening for the sound of something large walking behind her.
