The fog came down over the Hatchet Pass at twenty past four, which is when Mr Tennant's Dakota always wanted to be over the saddle. I stood in the hut with the wireless hissing and watched the pencil markers on the board slide about like beetles. Nobody had told the sheep that the aeroplane was late, and the sheep, being sheep, had wandered onto the strip to inspect the windsock.

Ruth from the post office brought up a flask and a tin of shortbread and said the tea would go cold before the engine did. She has a way of saying things that make a crisis sound like a bus timetable. Then the drone came through the cloud, low and stubborn, and the wheels touched down so gently I nearly missed it. Tennant climbed out, looked at the sheep, looked at me, and said, Well, life's a trip, Eleanor, then went off for his tea without another word.

I have been turning that line over ever since. It was chalked on the board by the door, in his hand, the day he first took me up over the pass. I thought it was a joke. Now I think he meant a route is only a line you draw after you have been lost a few times, and the dotted bit in the middle is where the good weather happens.

Anyway, the Dakota is grounded until Thursday, so you may as well send the parcel to the hut. Tell Dad the sheep are fine. Tell him the plane is fine too, mostly.
