A fine line tattoo of an airmail envelope with a small red heart and curled swirls above it, with arrow-like dashes pointing towards the heart. A blue scroll banner beneath the envelope carries the handwritten words curiosities and delights. Thin blue outlines dominate, with red and blue accents on the envelope border and the heart, set against a plain close-up of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The postwoman of Hollin Edge had carried letters through the beech wood for thirty years, and in all that time nobody had asked her why the envelopes for the cottage at the far end of the path were always the thin blue kind from over the sea. She did not ask either. She only kept them dry inside her coat, because the red and blue stripes around the border were the sort a person should not let get wet.

One March the rain came sideways through the trees and the path became a stream. She reached the clearing near dusk and found the door already open, a lamp on the sill and a small red heart cut from felt pinned above the lintel. An old man sat at a table buried in paper. He held out his hand for the letter without looking up, as if he had been counting her footsteps all afternoon.

"You're late," he said. "It has been waiting since summer."

She told him the stamp came from a country she had never seen. He laughed, a dry sound like a page turning, and tore the envelope open with his thumb. Inside was only a card with a line of ink leaning forward as if it were running: curiosities and delights. He read it twice, then reached into a drawer and took out a bundle of letters tied with string, every one addressed in her own handwriting.

She had never written to him. She had never written to anyone. He tapped the bundle and said, "Those are for the day you come up the path to fetch them," and he pushed the lamp toward her so she could see the road home. She walked back through the trees with the rain stopped and the envelopes held against her chest, and she did not open them until the village lights showed through the trunks.
