Inverted triangle with crystals and planets on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

An inverted black triangle filled with a cluster of crystal shapes sits at the centre, with a small sun above it and several planets, including one with a ring, on dotted circular orbits below. The planets and crystals are rendered in fine line and stippled dotwork, while the triangle is solid black with grey detail. The design is centred on a pale forearm against a dark knitted sleeve.

The brothers at Saint Ottilia's had been grinding lenses for forty years, and Brother Anselm still could not tell a true star from a flaw in the glass. So when the abbot's nephew came up the mountain road with a crate of quartz from the mine at Leck, Anselm did not look at the crystals first. He looked at the sky through the north window, where the dotted line of the planets wheeled above the snow.

"Six points of light that never agree on their paths," he told the boy, who was perhaps twelve and had come to be useful. "Saturn carries its ring like a bishop carries a grievance. The others just follow." He set a crystal on the brass plate and tilted it until the sun from the window broke into a hundred small rainbows. "Glass that bends light is no different from a mountain that holds it. Both are only patient."

The boy asked why the triangle was turned upside down, and Anselm laughed, a dry sound like a page turning. "Because the old masters drew the heavens pointing down to us, and we were too proud to draw them the other way. A sun above a black cave full of jewels. That is how the world looks when you are standing in a cellar."

That night Anselm carved the sixth crystal's facets himself, one fine line at a time, and when the boy woke he found the old man asleep at the bench with a stylus still in his fist. Over the north window, the planets had moved a full finger's width across the glass, exactly as the tables promised, and the boy understood that the patience was never in the stone at all.
