Marjorie Penhale had been sweeping the chapel of Carrow Keep for three weeks before she noticed the wings. They were pinned to the back of the old iron door, tangled in ivy, the scrolls of rust so fine they looked like lace that had decided to stay. Nobody had told her the castle still kept a fairy.

The estate man, Mr Dunstable, said the fairies had gone with the last Lord Carrow, who had lost them at cards. She didn't believe him. She believed the way the tiny iron curls caught the afternoon light, and that the door had swung open that morning when no one had touched it.
On the seventh day she found the figure standing on the broken parapet, one hand on her hip, head tilted as if asking the weather for its opinion. Her wings were stitched from shadow, and every loop was a little gate, a little lock. Marjorie offered her the heel of her bread. The fairy laughed, a sound like a key turning in cold wards, and pointed at the door.
Marjorie unlatched the orchard gate that afternoon, and the wings went through it, leaving a faint dust of rust on her palm. She never swept the chapel again. Some mornings she still finds a curl of iron on her doorstep, bright as a new penny, and she keeps it.
