Cheshire cat and teacup design
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a grinning Cheshire cat with blue eyes peering out of a blue and white patterned teacup, with its striped tail curling down through a saucer. Around it sit a red rose, a playing card, a brass key, a cupcake, a bottle labelled Drink Me, a tag reading Eat Me and a top hat. Bold black outlines are combined with coloured ink and soft purple wash behind the motifs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The Queen of Halvary had sent for every clockmaker between the mountains and the sea, and not one of them could tell her the hour. The palace bells rang when they pleased. The rose garden wilted at noon and bloomed again at midnight. So when a grey cat arrived at the kitchen door carrying a blue and white teacup, the steward let it in, because nobody else in Halvary knew what else to do.

The cat did not bow. It sat on the saucer with its striped tail coiled over the rim and grinned until its teeth showed, and its eyes were the blue of a clear winter morning. 'You want the hour,' it said. 'Everyone wants the hour. Eat the little cake first, and then you may have the key.' The queen, who had never eaten anything without a steward tasting it first, ate the cake. It tasted of lemon and of years she had not lived yet. Then she drank from the bottle marked drink me, and the card on the table, the queen of hearts, turned face down by itself.
When she woke the room was full of ticking. Every clock in the palace had started again, though no clockmaker had touched them, and the brass key lay on the windowsill beside a single red rose. 'Halvary keeps its hours by forgetting them,' the cat said from the teacup, which had not grown any larger and yet seemed to hold the whole throne room. 'Wind your own clocks, Majesty. I have better things to do.'
The queen did wind them, every morning, for forty years. The steward swore that on windless nights a small grey shape sat on the palace wall, grinning at the bells, and that the bells were never once late after that.
