Alice with white rabbit and Cheshire cat design
Fine line · Mixed · Flash
A pencil and ink drawing of a young girl with a large hair bow, holding a teacup beside a white rabbit with a pocket watch and a grinning striped Cheshire Cat. Fine, detailed linework and soft shading are used throughout, with the rabbit and cat in grey tones. Several roses along the bottom edge are coloured in red, which balances the otherwise monochrome composition.

Nobody in twenty-two years at Coldharbour Crossing had declared a cat that grinned after it had been checked through the scanner. The woman in front of me had a white rabbit tucked under one arm, a silver pocket watch chained to its waistcoat, and a porcelain teacup she held as if it might spill the afternoon. I asked her what was in the bag. She said, very politely, that it was mostly roses, and that they had been painted red by people who were frightened of the Queen.

The rabbit checked his watch and told me we had forty seconds before the barrier closed for lunch, which we had not, because I had set the clock myself that morning. I ran the bag through again. The cat's striped shape showed up on the screen as a smear of ink, then as a set of teeth, then as nothing at all, which is the reading I have learned to fear most.
I stamped her form. Duty on tea, I wrote, and under livestock I wrote nil, because the cat had already climbed onto the bonnet of the car behind her and was watching the queue with great satisfaction. The woman thanked me and asked whether I would like to see the garden on the other side. I said I had a shift to finish. She smiled as though she had expected that.
When I filed the day's log that evening, the declaration sheet in my tray had a red stain blooming along its bottom edge, sharp-petalled and exactly the colour of the ink she had dabbed on the roses. I still keep it in the drawer. The box marked goods to declare is still blank.
