The manager wanted the cat taken off the posters. Too much like a joke, he said, leaning on the bar of the Blue Lantern with his thumb hooked in his waistcoat. Nell Ashdown said nothing. She tapped her cigarette against the ashtray, watched the grey smoke rise and fold itself into a shape like a bun above her head, and went back to the piano to finish the song.

Nobody in Liverpool had seen a cat sing before. She came on at ten in the dotted collar she had beaded from old shirt buttons, and the room went quiet the way a room does when it expects a mistake. Her voice was low and scraped at the edges, like a match on a box. She let the cigarette burn between two fingers while she sang, never once lifting it to her mouth, and the smoke drew itself in fine loops up past the lamps.

Halfway through the third number a man in the front row laughed, loud and easy, and the cigarette stopped moving. Nell kept her eyes half closed. She waited until the laugh had run out of him, then sang the last line slower, so the whole room leaned in to catch it. When she finished, nobody clapped for a moment. The manager stood at the back with his hat in his hands.

Afterwards she sat on the step by the stage door, tracing the smoke-lines with a fingertip on the damp brick. The manager came out and offered her a sovereign to come back on Friday. She took it, tucked it into the beaded collar, and told him the cat stayed on the posters, or she did not come back at all.
