Alien abduction scene with UFOs

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a large grey alien head with dark, almond-shaped eyes at the bottom, with two flying saucers above it. Two figures are lifted by beams of light, and small stars fill the dark background. The shading is soft and smooth, with strong contrast between the bright beams and the deep black sky, and the composition is tall and narrow.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and pour your glasses, because nobody at this table has heard how Aunt Win met the visitor in the top field, and she will not tell it twice. It was the summer of the hay, and the stars were out so thick over Marrow Hill you could have read by them. Win was lying in the grass with her brother Teddy, counting satellites, when the sky went quiet the way a church goes quiet before the bell.

Two saucers slid over the ridge, silver as a spoon, their undersides lit like the inside of a shell. Teddy said they were weather balloons. Win said weather balloons did not hum in your back teeth. Then the beams came down, white and solid as poured milk, and she felt the grass lift from under her shoulders. Teddy grabbed her wrist and the light took him first, then her, and for a moment she was floating above the field looking down at the hedge, where a grey face the size of a tea tray was watching them with eyes like wet black almonds.

It did not speak. It held up one long hand, palm out, the way Win's own mother used to when the kettle was about to boil over, and the hum stopped. Then it set them back in the grass, Teddy first, and the saucers went up through the stars as neatly as a stitch being pulled. Win said the thing had wanted only to see if anybody down here still looked up.

So here is my toast. Look up, the pair of you, every night you get, because somebody might be looking back. Ruth and Sam, may your sky always be full of stars and your hands always be held out to each other. To the bride and groom.
