Marjorie had known enough strangers across her counter to understand that a smile on a ticket meant either a joke or a warning, and she was too tired on a Tuesday to decide which.

Friday came and went without a knock. On Saturday the tram depot across the road switched on its floodlights, and the bus shelter bulbs smeared into fat gold blurs against the rain on the glass, the way they always did when the street was wet. Marjorie sat with the coat across her knees and finally looked at the stain properly. It was not wine. It was lipstick, a red so bright it had soaked through to the lining and left a ghost of a mouth on the silk.

She mended the cuff with a neat row of stitches, pressed the collar flat, and wrote a fresh ticket in her own careful hand. Then she hung the coat in the front window, where the bus shelter lights could find it, and left the door on the latch.
