All my love, Dad script on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo reads All my love, Dad in a flowing, handwritten-style script, with the word Dad set slightly lower and to the right. The lines are thin and even, with simple shading and no extra decoration. The ink is a dark blue-black against lighter skin, and the photo is framed tightly on the wrist with a dark background.

Mary Ann at the post boat took the envelope this morning without looking at the stamp, which is how I know she has read the others. Sixteen pages since the autumn gales, and not one has come back. I suppose that is something. Out here on Scarrow Rock the lamp takes four hours to trim and the gulls take the rest, so I write at the kitchen table with the storm shutters down and the wick smelling of paraffin.

You will want the news, so here it is. The fog bell cracked in February and the Board sent a man who stayed one night and left in the morning with his bag still half unpacked. Your mother's bread tin is still on the shelf above the stove, the one where you hid the brass buttons. I haven't moved it. The new glass for the lantern room came in a crate marked FRAGILE in three languages, and I laughed out loud at that, alone, like a fool.

The last thing I want to tell you is about the light. Every night I climb the one hundred and twelve steps and check the mantle, and every night I think of the evening you asked me why the beam never stops, even when the whole sea is dark. I said it was because someone has to be awake. You said that was a poor answer. You were nine, and you were right.

The post boat comes on Thursday. If there is a reply, Mary Ann will carry it up the path with the paraffin and the flour. I have left the kitchen lamp unlit in the window so you will know the door is open. Write when you can, and sign it however you like. I will know whose hand it came from.

All my love, Dad
