Until the very end script on collarbone
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is the phrase until the very end written in a flowing cursive script across the upper chest. The linework is thin and even, in dark black ink with no shading. The phrase sits horizontally on lightly tanned skin, with a grey top at the lower edge of the frame.

Rain had been coming sideways across Carver's Yard since seven, and by eleven the tarpaulins over the fishmongers were sagging like wet sails. I had my board propped under the awning of the stationer's, a sheet of gummed paper pinned to it, and a sign brush I had cleaned twice already because the damp kept swelling the bristles.

Mrs Abernethy came under the awning with her umbrella furled and a scrap of envelope held in her glove. "Can you do this in the joined-up hand, the one on the tea tins?" She wanted the words copied from the back of a letter, the phrase underlined twice in a man's hurried pencil: until the very end. She didn't say who had written it, and I didn't ask. I took my time with the loops, lifting and dipping the brush so the strokes stayed thin and even, so the letters looked breathed out rather than drawn.
When I held the finished strip up for her, the rain had found its way under the awning and beaded on the paper, but the ink held. She turned it to the light and traced the last flourish with one finger. Her husband, she said, always ran out of room at the end of his lines and had to fold the paper over to finish them. "He never ran out of time, though," she said. "Only paper."
She paid in coppers, tucked the strip into her purse, and walked off towards the bus shelter. I watched the water run off the stationer's gutter and kept thinking of that pencilled underline. The last stroke of the d had bled a little into the damp, leaving a small dark pool at its tail, and I left it there.
