A black script quote reads "It was then that I carried you" across the top of a foot, with several solid black footprints placed between the words. The lettering is a flowing cursive with medium-weight strokes, and the footprints are filled in with smooth, even shading. The photograph is taken from above and to the side on a light background, showing the toes and the length of the foot.

Mind the step, the lot of you, and sit down before my knees give out. Aye, that's the bride's grandmother over there in the good hat. I'll tell it quick, because the soup's going cold and nobody at a wedding listens past the second glass.

Ruth Galloway was nine the winter the tops above Wasdale went white in a single night. Her father had gone up for the ewes and not come down by dark, so the lad from the next farm went after him with a lantern and a shepherd's crook. He found the sheep first, then the prints. Small boots, going round and round a cairn, and then stopping. By the time he reached her she had stopped crying and was sitting in the drift as if it were a settle by the fire.

He didn't lift her at once. He knelt and set his own boots down beside her steps, one into each of hers, so she'd see the track was the same track she'd made coming up. Then he took her on his back, and the snow filled his prints as fast as he made them. He said afterwards that it was the only time in his life he'd felt the hill keep a record of him and forget it in the same breath.

So that's what I'll ask you to raise your glasses to. Not the ring, not the dress, but whoever kneels in the snow to match your steps and then carries you down anyway. Ruth never once looked back to see whose feet they were, and she never needed to. Health to the bride and groom, and to the lad, wherever his boots have got to.
