Script quote across the top of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Four lines of cursive script run diagonally across the top of a foot, with the text written in a flowing hand. The linework is solid black with decorative loops on the capitals and descenders, and the lettering is clear and evenly spaced. The image is in black ink only, with the foot filling most of the frame against a pale background.

Dear Mother,

You will have heard by now about the well at Hollin. The ground gave way under the old cistern on Tuesday, and Brother Edric went down after the bucket as he has done every morning for thirty years, and the stones took him with them. Brother Osric and I lay on our bellies at the lip and called down until our throats cracked. The shaft smelt of wet clay and cold iron, and the only light was what came through the broken roof.
We got a rope round him in the end. Father Abbot did not wait for the carpenter. He stood at the edge with his sleeves rolled and told us to pull, and when Edric's head came up through the mire he began the psalm. I cannot tell you how the rest of us took it up, only that by the second verse I could not hear my own voice for the others. He heard my cry, we sang, and he brought me up out of the miry clay.
Then the masons came, and the work is what you would expect. They are laying a new footing of great flat stones, and the old foreman, who has no patience for hymns, taps each slab with his mallet and says it must sit true before he will let anyone stand on it. Set my feet upon a rock, Brother Osric says, but I think of the foreman's mallet more than the verse.
Edric is in the infirmary with a broken wrist and a great deal of complaint. Tell Father I am well, and that I still have his old penknife, which I found in the mud at the bottom. I will return it the moment I have scrubbed it clean.
Your loving son, Thomas
