All-seeing eye in a triangle with chains

Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows an open eye with a dark iris set inside an upright triangle, with a small radiating sunburst above and sprigs of leaves on either side. Strands of beads or chain loop beneath the triangle and end in a cross pendant. The linework is clean and dark on a pale background, with light shading in the eye and a purple tint across the image.

The chain on the brass lamp had snagged again, and Edith Crane spent a full minute working the links loose with her fingernails before she gave up and let the pendant swing. The little cross tapped against the counter. Outside, the gaslight on Tanner Street hissed and flickered, and the painted sign above the door, a triangle with an eye at its heart, creaked on its hook in the wind.

Her uncle had painted it himself the year he bought the place, with rays fanning from the top point like a sunrise that never quite came up. He said the eye was for the customers, so they'd know every pledge was recorded. Edith had decided long ago that it was really for him, because he never once let a pawned watch leave the shop without noting its scratches in the ledger.

Tonight the ledger lay open at a name she didn't recognise. A silver christening cup, a ring with a chipped garnet, a pair of opera glasses. The handwriting was careful, a little too careful, like someone who had practised their signature in a mirror. She turned back the pages and found the same name three years earlier, pledging the same cup, redeeming it the next morning with a sigh she could almost hear through the paper.

She sat beneath the eye for a long while, listening to rain on the skylight. Then she picked up her pen and wrote beside the old entry, in her own neat hand: Not this time. She locked the cup in the back safe and turned the lamp down low.
