Ankh and Eye of Horus design sketch

Colour · Flash

A red pencil drawing of an ankh with an Eye of Horus set across the crossbar, with a curled eye tail and a faceted, crystal-like lower shaft. The linework is sketchy and layered, with some shading around the eye and the ankh loop. The pink-red lines sit on pale green paper, and the design fills most of the frame.

The master's reed hovers over the sheet while you are still wiping red ochre from your thumb. "The eye goes first," he says, and taps the bare papyrus where the crossbar will sit. "A life sign with no eye is a key to a door nobody can see."

You have drawn the loop of the ankh a dozen times in the workshop, but never the eye, which belongs to the god and to the few men allowed to copy him. Your hand shakes on the first stroke. The line bleeds where the reed is too wet, and the master makes a small hiss through his teeth.

Outside, the stonecutters are working the crystal for the lower shaft, the faceted piece the client wants so the amulet will catch lamplight in the tomb. Dust hangs in the doorway. You can hear the copper saw going through quartz, a thin patient whine, and you count the strokes the way your mother counted bread loaves rising, until you lose the number.

By evening the sheet is full. The eye looks out from the crossbar with its painted lid, the tail curls away to the side like a sentence not quite finished, and the shaft falls in facets to a point. The master holds the page to the lamp and says nothing for a long time. Then he takes your reed, adds one shadow beneath the lashes, and hands it back. "Now it can see you," he says. You look down, and for the first time the drawing looks back, and you are the one who has to lower your eyes.
