A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maureen Pyke had me pinned by the raffle table, holding a plastic cup of orange squash and asking whether I still played the clarinet, when I saw Danny Ockenden reading the old class photos on the wall as though they might be a test he had forgotten to revise for.

"Still got your yearbook?" he said, when I got close enough. He had the look of a man who had driven a bus for twenty years and still kept his hands in his pockets when he wasn't steering. I had kept it. It lived in a shoebox under my bed with a broken Casio and a bus pass from 1996. He had written in it on the last day of Year Eleven, in the bold, slanting capitals he used for everything, and then, underneath, something he had clearly rubbed out and started again.

"You wrote something," I said. "Did you?" He squinted at the carpet. "Probably something rubbish." It wasn't rubbish. It was two lines, one trailing into the other, the last word stretched long and looped beneath with a tail that became a heart, lopsided, as if the pen had lost its nerve halfway through. All the love, it said, and nothing else, no name, no date. For years I had read it as a joke about everyone in the year getting along. "It wasn't a joke," he said quietly, and then the hall lights flickered and Maureen shouted that the buffet was open.

Danny went to the buffet. I stayed by the photos with the yearbook open at the page, and realised the heart was pointing towards the door, the way you'd point at someone you were too shy to name. I folded the corner over and went after him.
