Allons-y and police box outline on an arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A blue outlined police box, similar to the TARDIS, sits on the arm with the word Allons-y written across its centre in black cursive script. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering is set over the lower part of the outline. The plain background is a dim room with a radiator and some household items, which is out of focus.

The snow had come over the top of Bwlch Ddu faster than the forecast promised, and I was still two miles short of the lay-by when a blue box appeared at the edge of my headlights, standing on the verge as if someone had parked it there on purpose. I braked, swore, and got out with the torch, because nobody in their right mind leaves a police box on a mountain pass in February.

It had been a telephone box once, though the paint had gone chalky and the lamp on its roof was dark. Someone had tied a strip of red ribbon round the door handle. When I pulled the door, a single bulb flickered on, and on the shelf beneath the dead phone sat a flask of tea, still warm, with a note in capitals: NOT FOR YOU, SHEPHERD. TAKE THE LOW ROAD. Underneath, smaller: GO ON, THEN.
I didn't take the low road. I'm not proud of that, but the wipers were groaning and the hills had already vanished, so I poured the tea into the cup lid, pocketed the ribbon, and left the door open for whoever came after. The phone began to ring as I reached the cab. I let it ring twice, then picked it up, because my mother had always said a ringing phone on a bad night is somebody who needs you.
A woman's voice said, "Ah, good, you stopped," and then something about a bridge that had not yet been built and a sheep that had been waiting a very long time to be counted. When I looked back, the box was gone. The verge was white and empty, and the only thing left was the ribbon, folded into a neat square on the bonnet of my van.
