Fine line tattoo of a blue Tardis outline with the word Allons-y in black script across the inner forearm.

Tardis outline with Allons-y script on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A thin-lined outline of a police box, shown in blue, sits above the handwritten word Allons-y in black script. The tattoo is centred on the inner forearm, photographed straight on against a plain, slightly out-of-focus indoor background. The linework is crisp and even with no shading, and the colour is limited to the blue outline and the dark script.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The box had sat in Bay Nine for eleven years before anyone on Carrow Station thought to ask what it was. Hadley Ferris wanted it logged as scrap and sold by the kilo, so I was sent down with a torch and a clipboard to write the number on its side. The manifest called it a police box. The manifest had also once called a crate of reactor coolant a crate of cabbages, so I didn't trust it.

Inside, it was larger than the bay. I stood in the doorway with my mouth open while the torch beam sank into a room of railings and a console the colour of old pennies. A glass column hummed when I breathed on it. A brown coat hung from a hook, sleeves turned in, as if someone had only stepped out to check the weather. I measured the walls, counted the bolts and wrote non-ferrous, salvage value nil in the column, because that was the job.

Above a brass lever, someone had burned two words into the metal in a looping hand: Allons-y. Nobody on Carrow had ever bothered to translate them, so I did it under my breath, the way my grandmother used to say it at the airlock door. Let's go. I put my hand on the lever. It was warm, which nothing in Bay Nine had been for a decade.

The lights came up gold and the floor fell away. When the bay lamps flickered back on, the box was gone, and where it had stood was a scorched blue outline on the deck, the exact shape of a police box, with two words burned across it. Hadley wanted my report by morning. I wrote salvage value nil, then, because nobody could check it and it was the truest thing I had, I added: departed under its own power.
