Black script lettering reading Allons-y beside a blue TARDIS with small dots, on the inner upper arm.

Allons-y lettering and TARDIS on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the word Allons-y in flowing black script, with the letters filled in solid and a looping, calligraphic finish. To the right, a blue TARDIS police box is drawn with shading on its panels and small dots trailing from its top corner. The arm is raised against a plain, dark grey background, so the ink stands out clearly.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the foxgloves. My grandmother kept the walled garden behind the vicarage at Little Haddon, and the summer the blue box came, she was the one who found it, standing among the runner beans as though it had always been there and had only now remembered to tell us.

It was taller than the gate and no wider than a wardrobe, with a lamp on its roof that blinked slow as a sleeping cat. Gran walked round it three times with her trowel in her fist. On the fourth lap the door opened and a man put his head out, hair like a windblown hedge, and said the word that had been painted on the side in gold: Allons-y. Let's go. Then he looked at the beans, looked at Gran, and asked whether she had any tea, because he had been away a very long time and was starving.

She gave him tea. She gave him rhubarb crumble. And when he stepped back inside, she followed him, because she had never once in seventy years been asked to go anywhere so politely. The garden stayed as it was, except that the dust the box left behind hung in the air a while, bright as spilt sugar, and settled on the path in a line of tiny dots that led, Gran swore, all the way to the gate.

She came back the next morning in her apron, with the crumble tin under her arm, and found the path swept and the beans staked. Nobody in the village ever saw the box again. But the bean rows grew that year taller than any man in the parish, and every August, when I was small, she would point at the gravel and say, Follow the dots, and we would, as far as the gate, and no further.
