The seed packets were still in the biscuit tin when Ruth found them, their corners curled, each labelled in her father's square capitals. Sweet pea, Painted Lady. Night-scented stock. On the inside of the lid, in a hand that drooped towards the hinge, he had written one word: Always. She took it for a note about watering until the third time she read it.

She carried the tin to the allotment on a Saturday in March, when frost still furred the water butt at seven. Mr Okafor from plot twelve was scraping moss off the path and nodded at the tin without asking. She sowed the stock in a row of modules on the potting bench, pressing each seed down with one fingertip the way her father used to, and found the rhythm steadied her hands.

By dusk the sky over the railway cutting had gone the deep blue of ink that needs refilling, and three stars came out above the greenhouse ridge, close together, like a little triangle someone had drawn to show where to dig. Ruth felt foolish for hoping they meant anything. Then Okafor laughed at the far end of the plots, a rusty sound, and she heard the flask lid unscrew.

She tucked the empty tin under her arm and wrote the date on the first module in pencil. Next summer the stock would smell of cloves after dark, and she would open the tin again and read the lid without thinking it was about watering.
