Always script with Deathly Hallows symbol
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the word Always in a flowing cursive script, with a triangle, circle and vertical line forming the Deathly Hallows symbol to its left. The linework is a single consistent black line with no shading, and the lettering has a looped tail that extends beneath the word. The image is a close, straight-on photograph of the skin with a dark background.

The sign-writer's wagon smelled of linseed and sawdust, and Edith had three days to letter the new name across the side of the Dodgem cars before the fair pulled out of Hexham. Her brush hand had started to shake in the mornings, so she worked late, the paraffin lamp hung from a nail, while the generator coughed outside the caravan.

Her grandson Caleb climbed the wooden steps with a tin of gold leaf he had borrowed from the ticket booth and a question he had clearly been rehearsing. "What's the Always for?" he asked, pointing at the sketch pinned above her bench. She didn't look up. "Every fair keeps one word. The old man who ran the carousel wrote it on the centre pole." She drew a triangle in pencil, then a circle inside it, then a single upright stroke through both, like a mast.
"That's not a word." "No, it's a promise with the sums left out." He watched her dip the brush in black enamel and swing it out in one long unbroken curve, the cursive running off the A and dropping a tail beneath the letters so it hung like a rope let down to the ground. She never lifted the brush. A broken line, she said, was a lie the paint could see.
When the sign dried, Caleb ran his thumb under the loop and found it painted so fine that it caught the lamplight. "Will it last?" "Paint never does," Edith said, wiping her hands on her apron. "But the wheel will be going round by dawn, and somebody will still be looking up at it."
