Always script with Deathly Hallows symbol
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the word Always in black cursive script, with a black triangle and circle symbol on the left. Fine black linework sits over soft watercolour-style splashes of teal, pink, purple and red. The design is centred in the frame against plain skin.

The hall smells of squash and floor polish, and the name badges are still in their plastic sleeves on a trestle table by the door. You peel yours off the wrong way and it tears across your surname. Across the room, Priya Lidgett is holding a paper cup as if it owes her money, and you already know she will be the first to ask whether you kept the thing you were both so sure would last.

Thirty years ago, behind the bike sheds at Fernhill Comprehensive, the two of you drew the same three shapes on each other's pencil cases: a triangle, a circle, and a single straight line running through both. Nobody else understood it. You argued for a whole term about whether the circle was a stone or a ring, and Priya said it didn't matter, it was just a way of saying a thing would hold. You wrote the word underneath in purple gel pen, badly, and she corrected your spelling, which you never quite forgave.
She crosses the hall now and asks what happened to the pencil case. You admit it went into a skip somewhere outside Basingstoke, along with most of the nineties. She laughs, the same laugh, and takes a biro from her handbag. Without asking, she turns your tattered badge over and draws the triangle on the blank back, then the circle, then the line through both.
You watch her write the word underneath, slowly, checking each letter as she goes. This time she gets the spelling right, and you realise she has been carrying the same drawing around too, somewhere on herself, faded at the edges and still holding.
