To the left sits a geometric emblem made of a triangle, a circle and a vertical line. The image is a close, evenly lit photograph of the wrist against a plain skin background, with only black ink and grey shading.

The trouble began when his granddaughter, Maud, came down to the landing with a wedding of her own on the way. She was marrying a glazier's son from across the town, a boy who could not whistle and who cried at every christening. "Grandad," she said, "what do I give him that will last?" The old man turned the stone over in his fingers for a long time, and then he laughed so hard the oars rattled against the boat. "Nothing lasts," he said, "that is why we have to say it out loud."
So he took her to the water at dusk and taught her the word. Always, he said, is not a promise about the future. It is a line you draw across the river so that whichever bank you stand on, you know exactly where the other one is.
Shall we raise our glasses? To Maud and her glazier, who still can't whistle. Always.
