Black lettering tattoo of the Deathly Hallows symbol with the word Always beneath it, over a blue wash, on the top of a foot.

Deathly Hallows and Always on a foot

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo on the top of a bare foot, with toes and a light blanket visible at the edges. The Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle with a circle and a vertical line, is outlined in bold black linework and sits above the word Always in black script lettering. A soft blue wash sits behind the symbol and fades into the skin, with the ink dominating and the blue adding colour.

Mind the step, it's loose, same as the tide. Now, you want the one about Morrow Quay, when the sea had taken the high road and the gulls were the only clerks left. My grandmother's grandmother kept a ferry there, and she had three things from her own mother: a grey stone with a hole through it, a length of cloth that never dried, and a little brass ring with no mark on it at all.

Nobody knew what the three were for until the Harrow boy came down the slipway in the rain, asking for passage to the Shell Towns across the drowned fields. He had no coin. He had a cough, a torn coat and a name he would not say. She told him the crossing cost one true thing. He thought about it a long while, then gave her the name of the sister he had lost in the flood, and the ferrywoman wept, because the name was hers too.

She rowed him over with the stone in her lap and the cloth wrapped round the oars, and when the keel touched the far shore the ring was warm as a bread crust. "Always," she said, the way her mother had said it, and the boy laughed at her for saying a word like that to a stranger.

Crossing back, she found the stone had gone cold, the ring was gone, and the fog had lifted off the water. The marsh folk still say that's how you know a debt is paid: the thing you give comes back in another shape and sits closer to the heart, where the tide can't reach it.
