Love infinity heart on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single black tattoo on the inner wrist, showing an infinity symbol that loops into a heart shape with the word love written in script inside the left loop. The linework is thin and even, with a slightly soft edge and no visible shading. The skin is warm toned and the background is a pale wooden floor, with the hand's purple nails providing the only other strong colour.

Old Hanna Pascoe mended nets on the quay at Porthkennack, and she would not let anyone else touch the loop knot. It was her mother's knot, a figure of eight that ran back into itself with a heart pulled through the middle, and she tied it into the first cord of every new net so the boats would find their way home to it. Her son Jory laughed at her for it. He laughed less the winter the Mary Ellen went out past the Brisons and did not come back by dark.

Hanna did not weep. She took the spool and the bone needle down to the harbour wall and sat with her feet over the water, working a single line of tarred cord into the shape she knew, loop after loop, saying the word her mother had taught her for it, which was only love, said plainly the way you would name a cow. The gulls came and sat on the bollards to watch. The tide turned twice. Nobody told her to stop.
On the third morning the Mary Ellen came round the point with her sail patched and one man short, and Jory stepped onto the quay with his hands raw from the pumps. He looked at the knot on the net in his mother's lap and said nothing for a long while. Then he sat down beside her and took the other end of the cord.
The net is still in the loft above the chapel, and the knot runs unbroken from one end of it to the other. Nobody in Porthkennack has ever found where it begins, and the old women say that is the whole of its use.
